VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION

Yeast is the most common cause of vaginal infection. Most women suffer from it at least once in their lifetime. Unfortunately, if you had yeast infection once, you are at greater risk of re-infection than women who have never suffered from it.

I am one of those women who was struggling with vaginal yeast infection for a long time. When I was 19-20 years old I was having yeast infections mostly once or twice a year - let say within normal limits. After my 26 birthday infection rate began to increase. Inflammations were appearing up to 5 times a year, but the worst was yet to come. From May 2011 to October 2011 I had vaginal yeast infection every 3-4 weeks. For three days I was on fluconazole - for another 10 days tissue damaged by infection was repairing itself and then after another week or so the infection was back. I've tried creams, vaginal pessaries, pills to swallow, nystatin, clotrimazol, and a plenty of other medicines (including some pills for people infected with HIV!). I replaced baths with showers and reduced the number of showers to 1 a day (except for specific situations like period). I got rid of all synthetic materials, tight clothes, sponges, sleeping in pyjama, swimming pools and public toilets. I was using only Lactacyd. Nothing was working. In October 2011, I was put on extended cumulative therapy with fluconazole. For 6 months once a week I had to take a dose first of 150mg and then of 200mg of Fluconazole. Treatment ended in April 2012. Since then, the I had a yeast infection only once. It was the end of August 2012. Infection was treated by using a 3-days cream. Unfortunately, I don't remember its name (Gynomic perhaps). The box was pink, and inside I found a pink tube and three white cardboard applicators. Cream was easy to apply and was giving no problems until next morning. The next morning after application, when the cream started to get out of my body, it was so painful I thought I will walk on walls. However, after 3 days of using cream and 10 days rest, there was no sign of infection. From August to that very date (03/01/2013) I didn't and I still don't have yeast infections anymore, even though I am sexually active.

After my visit to the gynecologist in August I made a few additional changes in my life.

  1. First of all, instructed by the doctor I threw Lactacyd (5.2 ph) away to the trash bin, and I replaced it with Saugella active (3.5 ph).
  2. Second, I threw away all thongs - including cotton ones.
  3. Third, after I learned about thyme's antibacterial and antimycotic properties (thyme is used in Saugella and in all kinds of creams against Acne), I have significantly increased the amount of thyme in my diet. I try to eat at least one meal a day with big amount of thyme).
  4. Last but not least, I decided to eat at least once a day products containing live bacteria (ecological yoghurt, freash cottage cheese, etc.).

I am not a doctor and I realize that every woman is different and reacts differently to stress. Every immune system is working differently. However, if you suffer from recurrent vaginal yeast infections and you don't know anymore what to do about it, perhaps talk to your ginocologist and consult with him my case. Maybe what helped me, can also help you. I keep my fingers crossed for you and for myself.
